Four Things To Do In And Around Weymouth

Four Things To Do In And Around Weymouth

Things to Do

There are many things to do in and around the picturesque and historic Village of Weymouth, Nova Scotia. There are hiking trails, outdoor concerts, art galleries, canoeing, kayaking and whale watching adventures, and much more.

Here are four things to consider during your stay at Bayside.

Canada Day Celebrations – July 1st

Canada Day has been a day of fun and celebration in Weymouth for decades. The annual Canada Day Parade attracts hundreds of people from all over Digby County and beyond. The marching bands, the community floats, the fire trucks and motorcycles, the young cadets and soldiers, the flag-waving children and adults that line the only road through the village make this Canada Day event one of the best in the province. And there’s a lot more.  There is a full day of activities and events from bouncy castles and magic shows for kids, to barbecues, auctions, ox and truck pulls and live entertainment, culminating with a huge fireworks display at sunset. It’s an event steeped in history and not to be missed.

Gilbert’s Cove Lighthouse – Gilbert’s Cove

It is one of the best-maintained lighthouses in the province and one of the most beautiful. Gilbert’s Cove Lighthouse is just a five-minute drive from Bayside. To many who stay with us, the lighthouse is a quiet place to walk and enjoy the view after a busy day of exploring. To others, it’s a place to have a family picnic by the shore, enjoy afternoon tea, tour the lighthouse or purchase a unique craft item from the lighthouse staff. Photographers will love this place, the unique architecture, the bright red and white lighthouse overlooking the cove, the rocky shoreline, and the amazing sunsets! And let’s not forget the Lighthouse Family Picnic held every 3rd Sunday in July, featuring local musicians, great food, prizes and fun for all.

Sissiboo Landing – Weymouth

It’s a travel information and cultural centre, a source of local art and crafts, genealogical records, FREE Wi-Fi, computer and printer access and a library of local books on the history of the five unique cultures who founded the Village of Weymouth. Located in the heart of the village and overlooking the beautiful Sissiboo River, the staff at Sissiboo Landing will direct and advise visitors on their journey of discovery and exploration in this unique region of the province. Read about the hardships of early Black Loyalists and Mi’kmaq First Nations, see photos of the amazing Electric City of New France and discover the role of Acadians and United Empire Loyalists in the settling of the region. Sissiboo Landing is a must-stop for any visitor, history-buff or genealogy enthusiast.

Festival Acadien de Clare – Municipality of Clare

Held in late July and August throughout the Municipality of Clare, the Festival Acadien de Clare is the oldest Acadian festival in the world. It is a cultural festival like no other in the province, attracting thousands of people every year. There are Acadian flags waving on vehicles, at homes and businesses. Everywhere there are people in traditional Acadian dress. There are parades, picnics, dinner theatre events, a festival hike, a bazaar featuring Acadian cuisine and crafts, magic shows, dancing lessons, and a lot of traditional fiddling. Experience the ‘tintamarre‘ or enjoy an outdoor concert on National Acadian Day . The annual ‘Grou Tyme’ is a must-see event featuring some of the best Acadian musical talents in North America.
